In recent years, especially in light of COVID, the political tension in the United States, and now the war in Ukraine, I keep coming back to a scene from the movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in which Galadriel asks Gandalf why he chose Bilbo Baggins for the quest, and he answers "I don't know. Saruman believes it is only a great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid... and he gives me courage."
